What is Medical Insurance?

It is possible to become confused as to the meaning of medical insurance. There might even be a few people out there that sincerely believe that medical insurance is there to prevent you from becoming ill. If only it was that simple! Medical insurance is there to protect people who become ill and need to receive treatment, offset some of the financial burdens of being unable to work as well as many other factors.

Medical insurance is one of the most important and almost crucial forms of insurance that anyone can take out. Unfortunately in the not too recent past, people were inclined not to take the issues of their health as seriously as they should. Lack f proper exercise, eating the wrong foods and not to mention smoking cigarettes mean that too many people entered into the 21st century not in the best of physical conditions.

Obesity is the modern day western epidemic, that brings with it diabetes, heart disease and even certain forms of cancer. Many people in their fifties are looking at a bleak future plagued by illness and disability, and this fact is a tragedy of our times. Insurance companies are reluctant to insure people who are chronically ill, and that is a fact that runs across all of the insurance companies in South Africa.

If they can be convinced otherwise, they will only issue cover on condition that a person’s incapacities have not been caused by illnesses contracted before the policy was issued. Sound cruel? It may well be, but if the insurance companies were to issue health policies were to act any other way; they would put themselves out of business.

Personal heath should be taken very seriously, and thankfully more and more people have begun to realize this. Healthier diets, increased awareness of the need for physical exercise has become the norm, and anyone who still smokes is soon reminded by all and sundry of the damage that they are doing to themselves as well as those around them.

And when someone who is healthy and fit goes to discover what medical insurance can do for them, they will be greeted with open arms by their broker or if they apply online. They will realise that the care and attention that they have pot in to maintaining their health will pay dividends. Not only will they receive maximum cover without question but their premiums are eminently affordable.

Even someone who, at one time, has been diagnosed with a major illness, especially relating to their heart. If they have taken that as a “wake up” call, and returned to relative good health, then they may be eligible to take out full medical insurance, even though their premiums might be slightly higher.

Once a person takes out medical insurance, and the earlier the better, even it their physical condition changes, as it may well do through time, then they will always be covered, and for every aspect of their health.
Insuring your health can come in two ways. By leading a healthy life style, and by backing it up with full medical insurance, you will be guaranteed that your health care needs, no matter what they are, will be taken care of for as long as you live.
