What Does Medical Insurance Cover?

medical insuranceMedical insurance is something none of us can afford not to have. In the event of an unexpected injury or illness the medical cost for health care can be devastating. If you do not have medical insurance then there is a good chance you will not be able to afford proper medical care.

Medical insurance is in place to afford you the ability to proper and adequate medical attention. Your medical insurance will cover the basics of regular checkups, sick visits to the doctor, specialist care when you are referred, hospital visits and urgent care visits. If you are in need of a prescription, an x-ray, MRI, or therapy your medical insurance will be there to cover the agreed upon costs. You might have coverage for 100% of surgeries or other medical visits but in most cases the insurance will pay a percentage, leaving you with the smaller portion of the bill.

In most cases there are deductible either per patient or per family. Until the deductible is met you will pay 100% of all costs and once it is met or exceeded you will pay the co-pay or percentage that is stated in your policy. All medical insurance policies are different, some offer in network care only and others will offer out of network coverage. You may have to have a referral to see a specialist where other insurance policies will allow you to see whatever type doctor you want without referrals.

Keep in mind that your insurance policy may cover your surgery but not all the therapy that the doctor is prescribing. You have to speak to your medical insurance representative to find out what you are covered for and what you are not. Before planning a procedure you should always refer to your medical insurance handbook to ensure your understand the coverage. You will be responsible for any medical bills that are not covered by your insurance.

Medical insurance does not normally cover any volunteered procedures such as a transplant that is unnecessary, donating a kidney or bone marrow, or any cosmetic procedure such as hair transplants, breast augmentation, nose jobs, face lifts, tummy tucks, stapled stomach, or anything that is deemed medically unnecessary.

If you undergo surgery your medical coverage will extend to the aftercare of that surgery. If your doctor admits you to the hospital with good reason your medical insurance will pay the bill. If your procedure states that a one day stay is all that is necessary and your doctor keeps you for three without any real medical reason for the extended stay you could be responsible for two days of hospital stay and all care that was given during that time.

It is important that your doctor be aware of what type insurance you have so they will know the regulations of the insurance company. If there are questions about the length of stay or scope of coverage you or your doctor are able to call and speak to a specialist and have all your questions answered.
