Medical insurance is something none of us can afford not to have. In the event of an unexpected injury or illness the medical cost for health care can be devastating. If you do not have medical insurance then there is a good chance you will not be able to afford proper medical care.

Medical insurance is in place to afford you the ability to proper and adequate medical attention. Your medical insurance will cover the basics of regular checkups, sick visits to the doctor, specialist care when you are referred, hospital visits and urgent care visits. If you are in need of a prescription, an x-ray, MRI, or therapy your medical insurance will be there to cover the agreed upon costs. You might have coverage for 100% of surgeries or other medical visits but in most cases the insurance will pay a percentage, leaving you with the smaller portion of the bill.

In most cases there are deductible either per patient or per family. Until the deductible is met you will pay 100% of all costs and once it is met or exceeded you will pay the co-pay or percentage that is stated in your policy. All medical insurance policies are different, some offer in network care only and others will offer out of network coverage. You may have to have a referral to see a specialist where other insurance policies will allow you to see whatever type doctor you want without referrals.

Keep in mind that your insurance policy may cover your surgery but not all the therapy that the doctor is prescribing. You have to speak to your medical insurance representative to find out what you are covered for and what you are not. Before planning a procedure you should always refer to your medical insurance handbook to ensure your understand the coverage. You will be responsible for any medical bills that are not covered by your insurance.

Medical insurance does not normally cover any volunteered procedures such as a transplant that is unnecessary, donating a kidney or bone marrow, or any cosmetic procedure such as hair transplants, breast augmentation, nose jobs, face lifts, tummy tucks, stapled stomach, or anything that is deemed medically unnecessary.

If you undergo surgery your medical coverage will extend to the aftercare of that surgery. If your doctor admits you to the hospital with good reason your medical insurance will pay the bill. If your procedure states that a one day stay is all that is necessary and your doctor keeps you for three without any real medical reason for the extended stay you could be responsible for two days of hospital stay and all care that was given during that time.

It is important that your doctor be aware of what type insurance you have so they will know the regulations of the insurance company. If there are questions about the length of stay or scope of coverage you or your doctor are able to call and speak to a specialist and have all your questions answered.

When you first decide to obtain medical insurance coverage you may be asked to have a medical exam first. The reasons for this vary from insurance company to insurance company. The medical exam is used to determine your current health status. Depending on how your health is rated this can determine the cost of your medical insurance. If you are in perfect health and do not participate in anything deemed dangerous by the insurance company you will receive the best rates possible. There are many things the insurance company may frown on such as smoking, drinking, or even participating in extreme sports. Your occupation can also place you in a higher risk category and raise your medical insurance cost.

The medical exam will be thorough and all information will be sent back to the insurance company. The insurance company will evaluate your exam results to determine the coverage policy that suits you with the rate that suits them. You can expect that if you are a smoker you will pay more than a non smoker. If you have a dangerous job you may get a break on rates if your company covers all work related injuries through workers comp. Your hobbies and recreational activities will be considered as well. If you spend time parachuting from airplanes you may be considered a high risk. You can be turned down for medical insurance coverage for many reasons.

Your habits and hobbies may seem irrelevant to how the insurance companies rate you. Think about the others who do not participate in anything dangerous or unhealthy; is it fair they pay the same rate as you? The medical insurance companies use specific details to analyze your rating and come up with the fairest cost for you and for them. Extreme sports can result in more injuries just as smoking can lead to lung cancer and excessive drinking lead to liver damage.

Your medical exam will also be used to gather information about previous conditions. Some medical insurance companies will not allow coverage for existing medical problems. Some will allow them if they were not previously diagnosed by another physician others will not. You may find some medical insurance companies will allow existing conditions even when they have been treated by another physician. If you have or believe you have any medical condition you should ask the insurance company about their policies before agreeing to the medical exam. If an insurance company who does not allow existing conditions examines you and finds one it may create a problem in finding one that will.

A medical exam may seem extreme but it is quite necessary. The insurance companies cannot take your word for it that you do not have a pre-existing medical condition. It would be ridiculous for the medical insurance industry to believe that everyone is in great health and requires no medical attention. The medical exam is in place to protect the insurance companies from fraud. This greatly reduces the rates that they can offer to you. The better they evaluate a potential client and determine appropriate rates the better chance you have at receiving the best possible coverage for your money. If you quit smoking or drinking or your hobbies change you will receive a discount on your policy. The fact that you are more likely to need medical attention makes you a higher risk, so if you can do anything to lower your risk rating it will save you money.

Any US citizen residing outside US would need an international medical insurance policy. An international health insurance policy is by far the most comprehensive policy as compared to any standard travel insurance policy, and also has equal number of benefits to any private health insurance policy. No private insurance policy would cover you outside US. This happens because such domestic insurance companies do not have networks out of US. Also, it is quite a tough task to predict the medical expenditures outside US, and hence makes it difficult for the companies to assess the monthly or yearly premiums from there. Furthermore, the claims made from outside the US may not be feasible to these domestic companies. Another reason is that an individual living outside US may not be eligible for the health insurance in that particular country. There are many countries that allow health insurance plans only to their own citizens or permanent residents of that country.

As against to the domestic health insurance policies, the international health insurance polices have no boundary constraints. There literally no geographical limits to where the policy could cover you. Many companies not only provide you cover outside US but also in US, unless you decide to return to US on a permanent basis. International health insurance policies would make lot of sense to individuals who travel the world on regular basis. For instance, you may travel for business, or your employer may send you overseas for an onsite project. In such cases, it is wise to keep yourself covered.

You can renew the international health insurance policies annually. This implies that you are covered for a year, and you can also not be denied for a cover on the expiry of the policy period. The interesting part is that although your premiums could increase at the end of the year, your coverage would remain the same even if you had made many claims in the previous year.

The foreign health insurance requires you to have a foreign residence. Also, you need to be residing at this residence to be eligible for the policy. You could certainly apply for the policy just before you reallocate to a foreign location. However, the policy would be active only once you have shifted.

It is not mandatory to be a resident of the country to apply for an international insurance policy there. You could apply for the policy from any country you desire. Majority of the companies provide the policies to the individuals belonging to any countries. However, the coverage amount, and the premiums amounts will vary from the company to company.

These international insurance policies provide all or more benefits that a domestic policy provides. Be it the doctor’s visits, emergency room visits, hospitalization, ambulance service, prescription drug coverage, and preventive health care and maternity benefits; it is all covered under the policy.

An international insurance policy may not be as important to you, if you are unlikely to move overseas. However, if you frequently move out of US, you must opt for one.

Unfortunately many people begin to think about medical insurance only long after the horse has bolted the stables. Looking after yourself is an obligation that we all carry, and when the question arises” Who should consider medical insurance?” the answer should be, all of us, and well before it is too late.

In actual fact there are all categories of medical insurance, each fulfilling a certain role in a person’s life. For example, many people forget or simply refuse to pay for medical insurance when they travel abroad, in most cases for a holiday but sometimes for business. Ask yourself how irresponsible can it be not to cover yourself when you are travelling?

So many things can go wrong; you are in a different climate, eating food you might not be used, drinking water that might not be too clean. In short, the chances of something happening that will affect your health, and you are alone or even worse in charge of your family, and yet you are lying in a hospital without any insurance cover. Short term medical insurance is no less important than long term.

Long term medical insurance reflects taking the long term view regarding not only yourself but also the people you care about and who care about you. You many times families have been split up or driven apart because the issue of medical insurance was swept under the carpet to be worried about another day. The time to not only consider but to take out medical insurance is now.

When the decision has been made to take out medical insurance, the person considering making this wise move should be prepared to devote whatever time that they need to look into what is involved. They should know what been covered will bring them, both in terms of peace of mind but also if and when the day comes that they will need to realize the policy.

Medical insurance covers the holder in many eventualities. They may become ill and need some form of simple operation. Nothing too serious, maybe a few days in hospital and a week or so of recuperation at home. Their insurance cover allows for any medication, expenses and any shortfall of income not covered by national insurance. These things happen in life, and medical insurance helps to make the financial and physical upheaval a little easier to bear.

We all dread the thought of becoming seriously ill and unfortunately there is no guarantee that it will not happen. Someone waking up in a hospital bed, will experience mixed emotions . First of all relief that they are still among the living, followed closely by fear for the future, not just for themselves but for their loved ones. The realization that there is a medical insurance policy in place will relive a tremendous burden for that person, and can often play an accompanying role in their recovery.

The importance of having comprehensive medical insurance both in the short term as well as the long, cannot be emphasized enough. If you start early enough, the premiums will be manageable Ask now for details from your friendly local broker or why not check them out online.

It is possible to become confused as to the meaning of medical insurance. There might even be a few people out there that sincerely believe that medical insurance is there to prevent you from becoming ill. If only it was that simple! Medical insurance is there to protect people who become ill and need to receive treatment, offset some of the financial burdens of being unable to work as well as many other factors.

Medical insurance is one of the most important and almost crucial forms of insurance that anyone can take out. Unfortunately in the not too recent past, people were inclined not to take the issues of their health as seriously as they should. Lack f proper exercise, eating the wrong foods and not to mention smoking cigarettes mean that too many people entered into the 21st century not in the best of physical conditions.

Obesity is the modern day western epidemic, that brings with it diabetes, heart disease and even certain forms of cancer. Many people in their fifties are looking at a bleak future plagued by illness and disability, and this fact is a tragedy of our times. Insurance companies are reluctant to insure people who are chronically ill, and that is a fact that runs across all of the insurance companies in South Africa.

If they can be convinced otherwise, they will only issue cover on condition that a person’s incapacities have not been caused by illnesses contracted before the policy was issued. Sound cruel? It may well be, but if the insurance companies were to issue health policies were to act any other way; they would put themselves out of business.

Personal heath should be taken very seriously, and thankfully more and more people have begun to realize this. Healthier diets, increased awareness of the need for physical exercise has become the norm, and anyone who still smokes is soon reminded by all and sundry of the damage that they are doing to themselves as well as those around them.

And when someone who is healthy and fit goes to discover what medical insurance can do for them, they will be greeted with open arms by their broker or if they apply online. They will realise that the care and attention that they have pot in to maintaining their health will pay dividends. Not only will they receive maximum cover without question but their premiums are eminently affordable.

Even someone who, at one time, has been diagnosed with a major illness, especially relating to their heart. If they have taken that as a “wake up” call, and returned to relative good health, then they may be eligible to take out full medical insurance, even though their premiums might be slightly higher.

Once a person takes out medical insurance, and the earlier the better, even it their physical condition changes, as it may well do through time, then they will always be covered, and for every aspect of their health.
Insuring your health can come in two ways. By leading a healthy life style, and by backing it up with full medical insurance, you will be guaranteed that your health care needs, no matter what they are, will be taken care of for as long as you live.

Anyone who will tell you that they do not need medical insurance is living under an illusion. Holding current and full medical insurance can almost be an obligation, not only to you but to your loved ones.

In South Africa and throughout the World, the health service has become increasingly pressed to supply a full range of medicines within their “basket”. This means that more and more people are obliged to pay for medicines from their own pockets.

For life threatening illnesses, particularly certain forms of cancer there are medicines available that, whilst they are not a cure, can harness the effects of this cruel disease and allow the patient a certain quality of life. Imagine the dilemma of brother, sister, mother, father or a child who has to witness their loved ones suffer and possibly pass away prematurely when it could have been avoided through taking out proper medical insurance.

In many cases, a person may need a particularly complicated operation, or even a transplant of a vital organ, such as a liver, kidney and going as far the most vital organ of all, the heart itself. There are many companies, dealing in medical insurance, who send their clients abroad in order to undergo these operations which will save their lives.

There is another aspect of medical insurance that many people are either unaware of, or simply take for granted. Medical insurance also takes care of people who have become severely disabled through old age or illness. These people can live on in a vegetative state for many years, and the costs, both financial and emotional, can tear families apart.

In the 21st century, medical advances are such that people are living longer and healthier lives, and attitudes have needed to be changed to adjust to this fact. There are diseases and afflictions that have become fairly common in the last decade particularly Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. People who contract these diseases do so late in life, and can live on for years, requiring round the clock medical attention.

All of these extreme cases can be covered by medical insurance and the financial burdens that they bring will be borne by the insurance company and not by the family. However in order to receive cover, the person taking out the insurance will be obliged to meet the criteria set by the insurance company, and sometimes they can be fairly stringent.

It is only common sense that a person who is applying for medical insurance be in good health. This means that the younger a person is when they apply for medical insurance; the better it is for all concerned. That is when the question arises “Do you need medical insurance?” And the answer has to be ” Maybe not today, but you might need it in twenty or thirty years”

Insurance companies have no moral obligation to insure everybody, and not under any circumstance. A person who walks through the door who bears all the physical characteristics of becoming chronically ill within the reasonable future, will find it difficult, if not impossible to be get medical insurance, and at any price.

The seeds for a long, healthy and comfortable life need to be sown as early as possible, with proper medical cover being an integral part of it. By making sure that you, and for that matter, your loved ones are covered; you are acting in a forward thinking and responsible manner. You do need medical insurance and now!

Private health insurance in South Africa has risen between 12% and 15% annually over the past 7 years according to the website of the country’s largest healthcare insurer, Discovery Life. Despite this, the escalating cost of good medical care coupled with the unacceptable conditions of many of the public hospitals has made the purchase of private healthcare in South Africa a necessity.

But the wide range of health insurance and medical aid schemes with the cover offered varying from limited to comprehensive makes choosing the right healthcare company for your needs downright confusing. Here, then, are some tips to ensure you get the right medical insurance at the right price.

Check what is covered

Firstly, take care when comparing policies to check the extent of the cover offered and to ensure you are aware of any exclusions (usually buried deep in the small print).

And how long your cover lasts

Secondly, you need to know that your policy will stand the test of time! Avoid companies that reserve the right to cancel a policy should you contract a serious illness or reach the maximum insurable age as it may be difficult or impossible to find alternative cover under these conditions. Similarly, steer clear of short term contracts where the company can refuse to renew the policy when you are most in need of it.

Know what you need

Be clear about your medical requirements. Premiums differ significantly depending upon your choice of cover. If you are young, fit and able to pay your own way as far as the family doctor and occasional medication is concerned, you might decide that limited cover in the form of a basic hospital plan treatment is all you need.

If, however, you or your family have medical conditions such as diabetes, if you have young children or are getting on in years, a comprehensive cover including chronic medication benefits would probably be necessary.

Unfortunately good cover does not come cheap and if you feel that comprehensive insurance is unaffordable, a good hospital plan can mean the difference between the best possible treatment in a private hospital and admittance to a public facility in the event of a medical emergency.

Honesty really is the best policy

Whatever cover you choose, be sure to fill in the health questionnaire completely and honestly. Include all previous illnesses or hospitalization, and, of course, current illnesses and treatment. One of the reasons that most health insurance companies do not insist on a medical examination prior to acceptance is that if any previous medical conditions are not disclosed they have a legal right to reject a claim. There is no point in paying for medical cover if you are not going to benefit from it when you need it!

Who pays and when?

Preferably ensure that your medical aid or insurance will pay the doctors or hospital directly. Some companies take their time about meeting their responsibilities and if you’re required to pay up front you could be considerably out of pocket while waiting to be reimbursed.

Your health is your most prized possession and should be given priority when planning your insurance needs. Failure to do so could result in a significant financial burden should you suddenly be faced with a serious medical emergency.
